LONDON: The shortlist for the best retirement housing design has been declared.

Over 250 designs have been considered by the awards secretariat. One of the finalists in this category is shown above.

High-end retirement homes are coming to a new development in Raleigh’s Oberlin community.

Senior living homes with a price tag topping $10,000 a month are coming to the Budleigh East development in Raleigh’s Oberlin neighborhood.

Williams Realty & Building Company and Liberty Senior Living filed site plans for The Flats on Bicton, 24 2-bedroom units that will be available to residents age 62 and up. The residential units will be on the northeastern portion of the site, adjacent to Hayes Barton Place, an upscale senior living community.

The flats will be available in two sizes — 1,890 square feet and 2,034 square feet — and monthly fees are estimated to be around $13,000, according to a disclosure statement submitted to the North Carolina Department of Insurance. Thad Moore, development director with Liberty Senior Living, confirmed the $13,000 monthly fee per unit.

Each unit has a study, wet bar, private balcony, 2-car garage and shared elevator access. The flats will be in four 3-story buildings with six units in each building.

Residents of the The Flats on Bicton will be part of the Hayes Barton Place community and have access to the same continuum of care offered at the Bloomsbury Health Center. The Bloomsbury Health Center has assisted living, skilled nursing and memory care.

There will also be access to the amenities, dining and programming at Hayes Barton Place. Offerings include an indoor swimming pool, fitness and exercise rooms, salon, movie theater, golf simulator, art studio, cards room, library, large meeting space, croquet, putting green, pickleball, bocce ball and a community garden. There are also five dining venues.

Moore said construction will start by April with a completion date in 2025. WithersRavenel has been brought on as the civil engineer.

Williams Realty and Building Company declined to disclose the development cost for the project.

The Flats on Bicton will sit on 1.84 acres at 2504 and 2538 Bicton Place. An LLC addressed to Liberty Senior Living owns the two lots, which have an assessed value of $1.65 million.

Many of the projects within Budleigh East are underway or set to break ground this year. Williams Realty & Building Company’s cottages will break ground this year while Beacon Street Development plans to begin work on condos in the spring and two mixed-use buildings in the fall.

Several million-dollar homes are under the construction in the development, which sits at the intersection of Oberlin and Fairview roads.

The Global Award winner will be announced in November in London. (Globals)
