Go ahead given for unique social housing project

LONDON: The go ahead has been given for an outstanding design for a new social housing project.

A $24 million social housing project will replace part of the ex-Banksia La Trobe Secondary College, in Bellfield, following a state government funding commitment.

The four storey building with 58 dwellings at 230 Banksia Street will be targeted at low to moderate income earners.

Launch Housing will develop and manage it after signing a 50 year ground lease with the land owner, the City of Banyule.

The proposed timber structure is aiming to achieve a 7.5-star NatHERS rating.

Completion is scheduled in 2023.

“The building will have generous indoor and outdoor communal spaces for residents, basement car parking and sit next to the relocated Community Garden and Bellfield Community Hub, which is being built,” a Launch company statement said.

Last month, council sold a 2.2 hectare piece of the former school to Glenvill, backed by Qualitas, which is planning dwellings, also in buildings up to four floors.
