Headphone startup Audeara chases Chinese market

BRISBANE: Brisbane startup Audeara continues to make waves with its unique headphones, cracking into the lucrative Chinese market.

The company’s technology, spearheaded by medical doctor and company chief executive Dr James Fielding, creates a personalised listening experience for users with an in-built hearing test, while also protecting hearing health.

Having already sold more than 3000 units since launching last year, the product is set to appear on China’s giant e-commerce platform JD.com, the country’s largest online retailer with more than 300 million active customers.

Dr Fielding said the headphones, which retail for $499 online and can also be accessed by patients on the NDIS and Australia’s Hearing Services Program, allowed everyone to experience great sound regardless of their hearing health.

“We want everyone to understand how important their hearing is, that their hearing is different from everyone around them, and start to pay attention to a part of their lives that has never really got that much attention before,” he said.

“It’s such a fundamental part of life, and hearing loss or changes over time affect an enormous amount of the population, we’re talking a third of all people.

“It’s not something which just affects older people, it’s happening to more people, at a younger age, and we figure we should get ahead of the curve and try to stop it, because prevention really is better than cure.”
