New multi-storey multigenerational student housing development to transform CBD

LONDON: A vacant inner-city site is set to be transformed into a multi-storey student accommodation complex housing up to 540 people.

The development — put forward by applicant Planning Solutions — would convert 641 and 643 Wellington Street in Perth into an 18-storey mixed-use building, with commercial businesses on the ground level and student accommodation on floors two to 16.

The ground floor would feature meeting rooms, a gym, bicycle bays and a cafe, whilst the top floor would include a study hub, communal kitchen, games room, plant room and dedicated cinema room.

The proposal for the 1879sqm site secured the unanimous support of the Metro Inner Development Assessment Panel on Tuesday morning.

“The site benefits from close proximity to public transport, retail and recreational activities, and tertiary education institutes, and contributes to the changing character of this area of Wellington Street as it transitions toward a more active, pedestrian-oriented environment,” a staff report reads.

“The proposed development has been designed to be highly functional and accessible, catering for a wide variety of residents.

“A highly diverse offering of student accommodation caters for a range of occupants and their various support networks.”

In February, the proposed development was put forward for community consultation but received no submissions.
