Renewed focus on creation of affordable over 50s city housing

LONDON: There is a growing emphasis on the creation of affordable over 50s housing in the city centre.

Almost 150 affordable housing units for seniors split between separate sites on West Washington Street are part of an application submitted to the city of Greenville by architect McMillan Pazdan Smith, Greystone Affordable Development and The Greenville Housing Fund.

The development, “Southernside Senior Living,” will offer one- and two-bedroom options for tenants aged 55 and older and priced up to 60% of the area median income, according to the development application.

The goal of the two-site development — which is within blocks of Unity Park — is to “reflect the forward-thinking goals of Unity Park while relating to the context of the Southernside neighborhood through the use of traditional materials and colors,” according to the plans.
