Seniors and disability housing woven into new community
LONDON: Seniors and disability housing will be woven into a new community which will consist of retail and service commercial offices, a banquet facility, restaurants, a 130-room hotel, and 557 residential apartments
It’s early in the process, but another tower is in the works for downtown Burlington.
On Sept. 8 the city held a pre-application community meeting for the proposed development at 2020 Lakeshore Rd. directly beside Spencer Smith Park. The plan is for two towers: one 35 storeys and the other 30 storeys on top of a five-storey podium.
The mixed-use development will consist of retail and service commercial uses at grade, offices, a banquet facility, restaurants, a 130-room hotel, and 557 residential apartments.
Lilia Koleva, a partner architect involved in the development, said the towers will be built with a gentle curve designed to reflect the lake.
“The owner and the project team is envisioning a truly landmark project with high quality of design and design excellence achieved through the iconic tower curves, noble materials and subtle lighting accentuating the built form,” said Koleva.
Interested members of the public were able to ask questions of the developer or just make a comment. Many of those who chose to speak were skeptical of what the proposal would mean for the city once completed.
Concerns by residents included what the additional vehicles would mean for traffic and parking in that area and what it would do for views of the lake. There was also general disagreement over having more tall towers in the city.
Lisa Kearns, the Ward 2 Burlington councillor, said feedback from the public will be taken seriously.
“You are being heard directly by your elected officials in the area and beyond, and we want to make sure that you know, that your voice is being heard and that all of your feedback is really critical and very important,” said Kearns.
