Shipping containers being integrated in boomer housing outcomes

LONDON: Shipping containers are increasingly being incorporated by boomers in quality housing design.

It might not look like much more than a shed and a few shipping containers from the outside, but don’t let that fool you.

The Thompson Beach home is surprisingly contemporary inside, with sleek fixtures and fittings and a large entertainment deck a stark contrast to its exterior.

The two-bedroom residence on a 979sqm block at 4 Stint Ave, which is made from professionally-modified containers and is just a short walk to the beach, has hit the market with a $300,000 price guide.

LJ Hooker Property Specialists managing director Michael Fenn, who is selling the property with Ryan Graham, said shipping containers modified for urban living weren’t usual but this one was “unique, clever and special”.

“It’s two containers fused together by a deck area,” he said.

“The first one is the living room with meals and kitchen and at the back you have the bathroom and the bedrooms.

“It’s very clever, it’s quite a cheap and solid way to construct a home.”

The property also has a large shed with garage, a workshop or games room, as well as a rumpus room with bathroom that could double as guest bedroom or teenagers’ retreat.

“This is not just a shed, it is huge,” Mr Fenn said.

While the residence’s bedrooms were yet to be finished, Mr Fenn said there wasn’t a lot of work left to do.

He expected interest in the property to come from Adelaide residences, as well as people already living in the Thompson Beach area.

“It’s going to be really interesting to see how the market responds to this one,” he said.

“It could be for a large family or even two families who want that home away from home.”
