$9 million dream community centre step closer to reality

LONDON: A new neighbourhood community centre design will set the tone for the future gathering points.

San Antonio City Council cleared the way for the Heritage neighborhood on the far Westside to get its new 17,000-square-foot community center. The council hired Tejas Premier Building Contractor Inc. during its December 16 meeting to the tune of $6.2 million to construct the Heritage Neighborhood Park Community Center that will be adjacent to the pool.

The are will also need infrastructure improvements to support the new facility, which brings the total cost to $9.5 million, according to city documents. Funds from the 2017 bond will supplement $8.5 million of the project cost, with the remaining cost coming from the city.

Among the facility’s amenities is a dining room, warming kitchen, classrooms, gym with exercise areas, a lounge and games area, a health screening room with staff offices, and a covered outdoor seating area. The community will offer programs for seniors and are youth once complete.

“The ‘Decade of Neighborhoods’ is far overdue and just like this bond project, future 2022 Bond projects should prioritize investments in our neighborhoods,” says District 4 Councilwoman Adriana Rocha Garcia.

“Decade of Neighborhoods” is similar in ethos to that of the “Decade of Downtown” kicked off by Julián Castro, which pushes the local government to invest in community upgrades and housing to bring growth.

The community center initiative was a dream led by late Heritage resident Barbara “Robbie” Robinette, according to a news release from Rocha Garcia’s office.

Construction is scheduled to start January 2022 and with anticipated completion in spring 2023.
