LONDON: A multigenerationall affordable housing project has finally been given the green light from planning authorities.

The Harmony Apartments project in South Surrey marks a milestone in providing affordable housing, with 91 units set at rents 10% below market rate.

At a recent White Rock council meeting, UNITI CEO Doug Tennant announced the final approval for the Harmony Apartments project, marking a significant milestone in the quest to provide affordable housing in South Surrey. Scheduled for completion in three years, this initiative aims to offer 91 affordable housing units, including 74 new and 17 replacement units, with rents 10% below the market rate. Designed to cater to a diverse demographic, the project includes 14 accessible and two universal units for individuals with mobility challenges, targeting seniors, essential workers, and people with disabilities.

UNITI, a collaboration between the Semiahmoo House Society, Peninsula Estates Housing Society, and the Semiahmoo Foundation, has a long-standing commitment to fostering inclusive communities. The Harmony Apartments project is a testament to this commitment, with a design that accommodates a broad demographic. Notably, the project has garnered significant support, including a $100,000 pledge from the Surrey Firefighters Associations, highlighting the community’s backing for such inclusive initiatives.

The affordable housing crisis remains a pressing issue, and projects like Harmony Apartments are crucial in addressing this challenge. With rents set 10% below market rate, the project offers a more affordable option for those struggling to find suitable housing. This initiative not only provides immediate relief for individuals and families in need but also contributes to the long-term goal of creating more inclusive and affordable communities in South Surrey.

UNITI’s approach goes beyond just providing housing; it’s about empowering individuals to lead self-directed lives. Through non-custodial services, UNITI supports people with disabilities in living their lives according to their own choices, echoing the mantra ‘nothing about us, without us.’ This project also underscores the importance of community support in ensuring that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can progress and thrive.

The Harmony Apartments project is more than just a building; it’s a beacon of hope for those seeking affordable and inclusive housing. As we look forward to its completion, we are reminded of the power of community and the importance of initiatives that support inclusivity and accessibility. With the support of organizations like UNITI and the community at large, we can make significant strides in addressing the housing crisis and building a more inclusive society.
