New app creates “sick leave” certificates on demand

LONDON: AN app that issues a sick leave certificate via your smartphone has been created by a pharmacist.

The Sicky app, which has had tens of thousands of downloads, could alleviate long wait times in doctors’ waiting rooms and also save patients from forking out exorbitant medical fees.

App users can obtain a sick leave certificate for $19.95 from a pharmacist, who will do a consultation via video call and deliver a certificate through the app.

Pharmacists in Australia are able to issue absence from work certificates.

Co-founder and pharmacist Avinash Vazirani said the app was created to free up the demands on doctors so they could concentrate on patients with more serious medical issues.

“It’s a telehealth app that provides a simple and convenient way for people to get in touch with a healthcare professional, in this case a pharmacist,” Mr Vazirani said.

“This enables people to get an absence from work certificate for sick leave or carer’s leave as required.”

Mr Vazirani said the app allowed pharmacists to assess conditions that did not require a physical assessment.

“This includes conditions that require 24- to 48-hour recovery, including bad period cramps or food poisoning, and parents who need to stay home to care for their sick children.”
