Boomers drive trend to build high end mid-city apartments

LONDON: Boomers are the drivers behind the trend to develop upscale apartments in the heart of the city.

A key Salamanca site could be transformed into new high-end apartments, plans reveal.

A development application has been lodged for 13-17-castray-esp-salamanca-0, for partial demolition, alterations and change of use, to pave the way for a total of six apartments.

The site, which is next to the Salamanca Wharf Hotel and The Silos development, is currently a mixed use building which includes office space, a gym and apartments.

It is proposed the first floor of the building, which already contains housing, be refurbished internally.

The gym and commercial tenancies on the first floor would not be affected.

The second and third floor, currently comprising of office space, would be transformed into apartments.

A penthouse would be constructed on the top floor of the building.

In the application, a planner said the development could create the potential for more long term housing in Salamanca.

“The proposal will provide additional high-end long term accommodation within the sought after Salamanca Precinct,” they said.

“The success of The Silos development in the area, and the nearby Salamanca Mews, shows high demand for living in the Sullivans Cove area.”

They said the development would enhance the cultural heritage of the area.

“This will contribute to the Sullivans Cove area being part of a vibrant, working city, rather than an ‘old city’ typology,” the planner said.

No carparking is proposed for the area.

Members of the public will be able to make submissions to the Hobart City Council about the proposed development until March 1.
